Set in a post-apocalyptic Soviet-like future, The Red Star is an all-action, combo-based fusion of arcade-style shooters and brawlers.
Loosely based on the comic of the same name, the three main characters, Kyuzo, Makita, and Maya battle through enemies and obstacles to the end of each stage, in which a scoring system awards points for upgrades and accessories.
My primary task was to incorporate and distribute every single enemy type throughout the main game and the unlockable arenas. The game became balanced in that each level would get progressively more difficult by strategically placing enemies and enemy combinations, rather than merely increasing numbers, that would require the player to be more effective at using both styles of attack (melee and ranged) in order to be successful.
In the Arena situations, 8 arenas could be unlocked by beating the game and then finishing the previously unlocked arena with a given criteria. Each arena was an enclosed space where different types of enemies could swarm in from numerous entrances along the sides, much like the classic arcade title: Smash TV. My task was to handle all the enemy implementation, selection, and rollout involved, like the story-driven mode. By utilizing each individual A.I. type and finding combinations that would increase difficulty without massive chaotic frenzy, I established patterns in the wave-based rollout, which naturally forced the player to adopt both melee- and ranged- attacks in tandem in order to be effective.
In addition to enemy rollout, I modified and created camera paths to provide more suitable conditions for interaction and participated in discussions, concepting, prototyping, and implementation of various other design elements throughout the game.
